B2B sales prospecting is the work of finding the accounts that fit, detecting when something is happening there, and starting a conversation with the right person before a competitor does. In 2026 it is signal-driven, multichannel and partly automated, and the phone is the channel where the conversation actually starts. This guide covers the definition, the channels, the cadence and the strategies that produce pipeline, with the numbers from our benchmark of 1,000,000 B2B cold calls in France.
Ten years ago prospecting meant executing outreach on a list: dial, email, repeat. Today the list is the least important part. The work has moved upstream, to three questions: which accounts fit, which ones show a signal right now, and which contact can we reach. Then outreach is the last step, and it is a conversation, not a broadcast.
Prospecting is not lead generation (marketing's job of attracting inbound) and not qualification (the discovery meeting). It is the bridge between the two: turning a target account into a booked meeting.
Phone. The conversion channel. It is the only channel where a prospect can object, you can ask "what do you mean?" and the meeting gets booked in the same minute. Our data: average connect rate 11.3%, 11% to 20% by persona and slot, 15.8% at 4pm. Trigger-based openers reach a 7-10% meeting rate against 2-3% for pitch-first ones. See the real cold call connect rate in B2B.
Email. The context channel. It warms the call and carries the follow-up. On its own it converts poorly in Europe, where deliverability has tightened and inboxes are saturated. In our experience, email earns its place when it sets up the next call, not when it replaces it.
LinkedIn. The recognition channel, and in France a bigger one than in most markets: a connection request and a comment before the call lift pickup, in our experience, because the name on the screen is familiar.
Events and referrals. The trust channel. Lower volume, highest meeting rate. Every event should produce a call list for the following week.
The mistake most teams make is running channels in parallel silos: an email sequence here, a call block there, a LinkedIn tool on the side. The cadence that works runs them in order, with the phone as the conversion step.
Persistence is where cadences break. Brevet Group data says 80% of B2B sales require five or more touchpoints while 92% of salespeople give up before the fourth. A cadence only works if the dialer makes the fourth and fifth call cheap enough to happen.
Reps use only about 20% of the signals already in their CRM, and 50% of Sonik's pipeline came from signals that were already there. Job changes, website visits, closed-lost anniversaries and dormant leads reactivating are the first list, every morning.
A call opening with "How have you been?" to a known contact reaches about 10% success in our data, against roughly 1.5% for a standard cold open. Your CRM holds years of these contacts.
65% of reps open by explaining what they sell. Do not. Name the trigger, then ask a discovery question starting with "how"; those lift conversion by 190%.
A buying committee has several people. Prospect three of them in the same week, with the same trigger and different angles. One meeting becomes a deal; one contact becomes a stall.
Before adding reps, add conversations. Parallel dialing gives reps about five times more conversations per hour, which is why our north-star is 20 conversations per day per SDR. Read how to make more sales calls without hiring more SDRs.
Dials, connects and meetings are activity. The number that decides headcount and tooling is cost per booked meeting: rep time plus tool cost, divided by meetings. In our experience, the teams that track it discover that the phone is their cheapest channel per meeting once the dialer removes the dead time, and that email-only cadences are the most expensive once you count the meetings they do not produce.
B2B prospecting in France and the EU rests on legitimate interest under GDPR: no prior consent, but you must name your data source at first contact, make opting out easy and honour it immediately, and keep prospect data no more than three years after the last contact (CNIL guidance).
Consumers are different. Since 11 August 2026, French law requires prior consent before cold calling a consumer. If you sell to sole traders or private individuals, check with your counsel which side of the line each list sits on.
Sonik is the phone layer of an allbound stack. Signals from the CRM and the website rank the list every morning, the AI call prep shows the trigger and the opener, parallel dialing turns the list into conversations, and coaching tags openers, objections and asks in every transcript.

Our founder sold at Google Cloud for five years, taking a quota from 1.5 million to 10 million euros, and built Sonik on one observation from that time: the deals that closed were the ones where a conversation happened the week something changed. Everything in the product exists to make that conversation happen five times more often.
Prospecting in 2026 is deciding who to call and when, then calling. Run the channels in order with the phone as the conversion step, start every morning from signals, and measure cost per meeting. This week, build your first list from the contacts who changed jobs or revisited your site in the last 30 days, and call them at 4pm.
