Why Outbound Changed: From Referly to Sonik.ai

We rebranded Referly as Sonik.ai because outbound has fundamentally changed, not because we wanted a new name. Five years ago you could survive with a cold list, a few email sequences and some cold calls. Today email reply rates have fallen from 5% to 1%, B2B mobile pickup rates from 30% to 10%, and everyone buys the same databases. The old playbook is broken, and the teams winning now put humans first, amplified by AI.

The old outbound playbook, and why it stopped working

The playbook was simple. Export a list from a database. Load it into a sequencing tool. Send five emails over three weeks. Call the ones who opened twice. It worked because few people did it, and because prospects still answered unknown numbers and read unsolicited emails.

Then everyone did it. The same databases, the same sequencing tools, the same "quick question" subject lines, the same AI-written first lines. The channel did not get worse because reps got worse. It got worse because it got crowded.

There is now a war for attention, and the attention is not growing.

Three numbers that explain the war for attention

  • Everyone has access to the same databases. A list is no longer an advantage. Your competitor exported the same 2,000 contacts last Tuesday.
  • Email reply rates have fallen from 5% to 1%. A sequence that produced 50 replies per 1,000 contacts now produces 10, and a share of those are "unsubscribe".
  • B2B mobile pickup rates have dropped from 30% to 10%. Our own benchmark of 1,000,000 cold calls in France puts the average connect rate at 11.3%. Roughly 9 dials out of 10 end in voicemail.

Put the three together and the arithmetic of a single-dialing SDR collapses. 100 dials a day at 10% pickup is 10 conversations, on a list identical to everyone else's, with no reason to call beyond "I found you in a database".

What the winning teams do differently

The teams winning today are not the ones sending the most emails or building the most automations. More automation on a saturated channel just adds to the noise.

They are the ones putting humans first, amplified by AI. Three things change:

  • More conversations. The scarce resource is a live human on the phone. Everything else is a way to get there.
  • Better timing. Calling the right person at the right moment, not everyone at once. In our data, 4pm connects at 15.8% and 8am at 9.8%. Founders pick up around 10am, marketing around 4pm.
  • Smarter prospecting. A reason to call, not a database export. Website visitors, job changes, closed-lost deals, dormant leads: reps use only about 20% of the signals already in their CRM.

This is a point of view, and we hold it strongly: the future of outbound is human-first, powered by AI. Not AI sending emails on behalf of humans.

From slow to fast, from cold to warm, from blind to smart

That point of view is the product. Sonik is an AI sales dialer built to move sales teams along three axes.

From slow to fast. Parallel dialing skips voicemails and calls up to 5 prospects simultaneously, so a rep spends the calling block talking rather than listening to ringtones. The result is 5x more conversations.

From cold to warm. Dynamic lists of warm leads identify the best prospects to call, like website visitors or contacts who just changed jobs. A cold call to a known contact that opens with "How have you been?" reaches around 10% success, versus around 1.5% for a standard cold open.

From blind to smart. AI prepares each connected call: who the person is, what they did on your site, why now. The rep gets the best insights and reasons to call before saying hello.

Sonik combines parallel dialing, lead detection and AI call preparation so sellers can focus on what AI cannot replace: talking to customers.

The math of a modern outbound hour

On average, a Sonik rep makes 150 dials, has 15 conversations and books 1 meeting per hour. Fifteen conversations an hour is what a single-dialing rep used to get in two or three days.

The meeting rate per conversation, around 1 in 15, is not magic. It is the same rate a good rep always had. What changed is the number of times per hour that rate gets applied. Volume of conversations is the lever; AI makes each of those conversations warmer and better prepared.

Common mistakes when outbound stops working

Adding more steps to the sequence. If 1% reply to five emails, 1% will reply to eight.

Buying a bigger database. The list is not the constraint. The reason to call is.

Automating the conversation. AI SDRs that send and reply to emails compete in the most saturated channel there is. The human on the phone is the only part of outbound that is not commoditized.

Keeping the old metrics. Emails sent and dials made measure effort in a world where effort is free. Count conversations and meetings.

How Sonik approaches outbound today

Sonik is an AI sales dialer for smart, fast sellers. The dialer handles speed: parallel dialing, voicemail detection, 5x more conversations. Signals handle warmth: website visitors, job changes, closed-lost and dormant leads, turned into dynamic call lists from the CRM you already have. AI call preparation handles the context.

The Sonik dialer during a session: parallel calls, statuses and the running count of meetings booked.

We run our own outbound on it, and 50% of our pipeline comes from signals that were already sitting in our CRM. The rebrand was the moment we stopped describing ourselves as a referral or signal tool and started describing what reps actually do with it: talk to more of the right people.

Conclusion

Outbound changed because attention became scarce and data became free. The answer is not more automation; it is more human conversations, better timed, better prepared. This week, count your team's real conversations per rep per day. If it is under 20, that is the number to fix before touching another sequence.
